National 5 Maths: Completing the Square

Course content

  • Completing the square in a quadratic expression with unitary \(x^2\) coefficient
  • Explanation: We need to be able to write quadratics of the form \(x^2+bx+c\) in the form \(\left(x+p\right)^2+q\), where \(b\) and \(c\) will be integers but \(p\) and \(q\) might be fractions.
×

Integer

The set of integers is the set of whole numbers {0,1,2,3,...} together with their negative counterparts {-1,-2,-3,...}.

×

Unitary

The word unitary refers to the number one.

A unitary quadratic has \(1\) as the coefficient of \(x^2\).

Examples:
\(x^2-7x+3\)
\(x^2-5\)
\(3+8x+x^2\)

Key ideas

  • \(\left(x+p\right)^2=x^2+2px+p^2\). The coefficient of \(x\) is double \(p\) and the constant term is the square of \(p\).
  • After we complete the square, the letter \(x\) appears only once. This makes it easy to graph the parabola.

Constant term

A constant term in an algebraic expression is a term that doesn't depend on the variable.

Examples:
The constant term in \(i^2+i+7\) is \(7\)
The constant term in \(-x^2+4\) is \(4\)
The constant term in \(5-y^3\) is \(5\)
The constant term in \(2+sin\ a\) is \(2\)
The constant term in \(7x^2+2x\) is \(0\)

×

Coefficient

The coefficient of a term in an algebraic expression is the constant multiple of the relevant variable.

That sounds complicated, but it isn't!

Examples:
Coefficient of \(x^2\) in \(3x^2\) is \(3\)
Coefficient of \(x^2\) in \(-x^2+4\) is \(-1\)
Coefficient of \(x\) in \(5x^2-3x\) is \(-3\)
Coefficient of \(x\) in \(6x^2-1\) is \(0\)
